The Brooklyn Bridge is a symbol of the power of human vision, perseverance and capacity to overcome enormous challenges.
It is also a national historic landmark that happens to terminate in a Department of Transportation parking lot today.
By activating the stair access, the Brooklyn Bridge will be the central hinge of a new Downtown Tourist Path, connecting the Bridge to Chinatown and Lower East Side to the North, Tribeca to the West, the Historic South Street Seaport and Museum, Wall Street and Fearless Girl, the 9/11 Memorial, Charging Bull and more to the South. It will help our neighborhood businesses have more customers, help our tourists navigate safely from Landmark to Landmark, and create a safer and enjoyable street experience for all.
The Brooklyn Bridge averages 19,000 pedestrian crossing daily and it is a MISSED OPPORTUNITY with a cost we are not acknowledging.
The Bridge MUST be utilized to drive local and tourist foot traffic to the many small businesses in our adjacent communities suffering through the pandemic.
Today - the enormous people power harnessed by the Brooklyn Bridge simply dissipates at City Hall. With no clear next step - the tourists and their dollars wander away...
Most tourists get lost trying to find their way to and from the Brooklyn Bridge, and to other plentiful and nearby downtown landmarks and areas of interest.
This is the Brooklyn Bridge's most direct access point to Chinatown, Lower East Side and the Historic South Street Seaport.
Would YOU go down there?
This Park Row street landing is what greets the brave people who venture down the stair - a very dark underpass with no clear signage, crumbling sidewalks, police barricades and no obvious safe route to the next destination.
Let's channel the enormous people power already gathered by the Brooklyn Bridge and use it to benefit our communities by creating SUPER SIMPLE WAYFINDING and SAFER CONNECTIONS.
